7 Tips to Protect Your Smile from Sugar

Jar of sugar cubesEveryone enjoys a sweet treat; however, having sugary foods and drinks too often isn’t good for your smile. Although you might satisfy your sweet tooth, they can also damage your enamel. While your enamel is the hardest substance in your body, it can’t regenerate. Once it is lost, it is gone for good. You don’t have to give up your favorite treats to protect your smile. Here are 7 tips to prevent cavities while satisfying your craving.

1. Commit to Brushing

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice a day. However, if you snack a lot, you’re better off brushing after every meal. The more often you eat, the more you are making your teeth vulnerable to cavity-causing bacteria. Carry a travel-sized or disposable toothbrush to take care of your smile even while you’re away from home.

2. Floss Every Night

Floss your teeth at least once per day to remove plaque and food particles from areas your toothbrush can’t reach, like between your teeth. Use high-quality floss to clean between each tooth and around the gum line daily.

3. Add a Daily Mouthrinse

A mouthrinse can remove sticky residue from your teeth. Your dentist in Fargo will recommend a mouthrinse that contains fluoride to strengthen your enamel to make it more resistant to decay. Rinsing your mouth with water is a great substitute if you don’t have a mouthrinse.

4. Choose Your Candy Wisely

Not all sweets are equal when it comes to their risk of causing decay. Sticky and chewy candy cling to the teeth and are difficult to remove, whereas chocolate easily rinses away. If you can’t resist a piece of candy, consider your smile when choosing your treat.

5. Chew Sugarless Gum

Can’t get to your toothbrush? Chew a piece of sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production to wash away oral bacteria and plaque. Sucking on a piece of sugarless candy is an excellent substitution if you don’t have any chewing gum.

6. Drink Plenty of Water

Water will keep your mouth moist and your body hydrated to reduce oral bacteria growth. It will also cleanse your gums and teeth from any lingering food particles that may harm your smile.

7. Visit Your Dentist Every 6 Months

Besides keeping your smile healthy at home, schedule a cleaning and checkup with your dentist at least twice a year. They will remove plaque and tartar accumulations while monitoring your dental health. If they find weakened enamel, they can intervene quickly to preserve your smile.

Don’t let candy and cookies leave a lasting mark on your smile. You don’t always have to give up your favorite treats, but be sure to have them in moderation.
